Antique WW1 Period Sword Stick with Ornate Silver Top Set with Four Asian Deities and Silver Collar- Hallmarked Birmingham 1915
Here on offer is a beautiful antique WW1 period Sword Stick or Sword Cane.
The black lacquered wooden cane is fitted with a beautifully engraved silver top that depicts four Asian Deities or God’s in fine relief work.
They are framed with ornate floral scrollwork and the top dome is skilfully chiselled with the image of a circular flower, possibly a Chrysanthemum?
This cane top is just a work of art on its own!
I can’t see any hallmarks or maker’s marks on the top, but this heavy piece does test positive for silver.
Where the sword fits into the cane shaft, there is a silver collar that has engraved scrollwork and an over cartouche that is still plain. The pinned collar does have a full set of clear English Hallmarks, which show the Lion Passant for English silver, along with Anchor, indicating it was assayed in Birmingham and the date letter ‘q’ for 1915.
There is also a maker’s mark that is the letters ‘J.H’, which I believe indicate the maker was the English silversmith, JOHN HUNTER.
The very long ‘Square’ shaped steel blade is 29.8” (76cm) long and 0.3” (0.9cm) wide at the base and still retains its very sharp point!
There are no maker’s marks on the blade but given its truly excellent quality and condition, I believe it was made by one of the many sword smiths in Solingen, Germany.
The top section and blade fit really snugly into the main section of cane, and it closes tightly, just leaving a thin line where the two sections join at the top of the silver collar.
The cane shaft has a metal lining for the blade, which is a true sign of quality, and the black lacquer outside finish is in excellent condition. There are some slight light knocks to the finish, as one would expect for something that is 103 years old.
The tip has a fitted brass ferrule.
This is a very unusual and high quality Sword Stick, made during WW1 possibly for an Officer based out in the far east?
If only it could talk!!
With the blade inserted, it measures 35.5” (90.2cm) long and about 1.5” (3.8cm) diameter at the top.
It weighs a heavy 370g.
