Beautiful Cased Antique Hallmarked Silver Card Case by Deakin & Francis sold by Reid & Sons 1876

Here on offer is a beautiful leather cased antique English hallmarked Silver Calling Card Case by Deakin & Francis, circa 1876.

This case is in mint condition having been stored in its rich blue silk and velvet lined leather covered case since the day it was made back in 1876.

Inside the top lid of the case, in gold lettering is the name of the high-end jeweller’s who sold the case, being:

REID & SONS
GOLDSMITHS TO THE QUEEN
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

Reid & Sons was established in 1778 in the heart of Newcastle and still exists today, but is now managed by Mappin & Webb.

This top quality rectangular silver case has an ornate geometric and floral design finely hand engraved on the obverse and reverse.

Also on the front is a vacant central shield shaped cartouche.

The edges of the case are slightly curved outwards and have a smooth plain finish.

The top section has a side hinge that open to allow access to the case to place calling cards, etc, back in the Victorian era.

On the inside lip of the case are stamped the English silver hallmarks, being the Anchor for Birmingham, a Lion Passant for English silver, a young Queen Victoria’s head and the date letter “b” for the year 1876.

Next to the hallmarks is the maker’s mark, D & F (in two conjoined circles).
This relates to the fine English silversmiths, Deakin & Francis, who where founded in 1786. They still exist today, managed by the Deakin family, being James, Henry and David Deakin.

Deakin & Francis silver pieces are eagerly collected and command a high premium in the silver collectors market today.

This handsome example is in mint condition, no splits or cracks, no solder repairs. The hinged cover is tight and shuts firmly.

Would make a great addition to any antique English silver collection and is extremely rare to find still in its original case.

The case measures 3.8” (9.7cm) high by 0.25” (0.6cm) deep and 2.6” (6.5cm) wide.

It weighs 53.4g.
