British Pattern M1853 Enfield Socket Bayonet – Relic Condition

Here on offer is a British pattern M1853 Enfield socket bayonet in relic condition.

This example is from a group of bayonets I have acquired, that were stored in a chest for years from a now closed museums donated stock.

The Model 1853 socket bayonet was designed for the Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifle-Musket a British .577 caliber Minie-type muzzle-loading rifle that was also used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War.

Sadly, there is no history or documentation about this example, so I can only guess that it was possibly a battlefield or barn find.

It has a very corroded finish that someone appears to have applied a rust preservation treatment to, now giving it a dark grey colour.

The locking ring is missing and it has some chips to the blade edges but no bends or repairs.
This solid Enfield bayonet, used by both the Federals and Confederates, will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bayonet, weapon or general relic collection.

The blade measures 17” (43.3cm) and the bayonet itself 20” (50.8cm) long.

It weighs 325g.
