Rare Victorian Hallmarked 9ct Solid Gold Medal awarded for the City Police One Mile Bicycle Race in 1897

Here on offer is a rare Victorian 9ct solid gold, hallmarked medal for the City Police One mile bicycle race in 1897.

The medal is in the shape of a Maltese Cross with ornate chisel work and the front has a raised circular disc engraved with the words:

PRESENTED
BY
Mr JAMES URQUHART
CONVENER
POLICE COMMITTEE
1896-97

The back has also been engraved with the event details:

ONE MILE BICYCLE RACE
CONFINED
TO CITY POLICE
JULY 1897

There is also a clear set of English gold hallmarks, the number 9 and .375 for English 9ct gold, an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “n” for the year 1887.

Therefore it would appear the medal was actually made in 1887 and not engraved until 1897.

It also shows the makers mark, “J.M” set in an slightly rounded rectangle, which I believe stands for the maker:

J E Moore & Frank Moore where trading as Joseph Moore, die sinkers & medallists at Petsford Street in Birmingham, England.

This Police Award medal is truly a fine quality piece that is in beautiful undamaged condition.

It measures 1” (2.5cm) wide and weighs 8g of sold 9ct gold.

As always with solid gold items you have to factor in for the scrap value, God forbid anybody would consider scrapping such a fine piece of Victorian Police memorabilia. However, at todays prices the scrap gold is fetching about £21.8 per gram, so the scrap value alone is £175!
