Impressive Original East India Company Percussion Cavalry Pistol - c1830

Here on offer is an original East India Company (EIC) percussion cavalry pistol, circa 1830.

My understanding is that originally this percussion cap pistol was a Flintlock pistol, having been made in England in the early 19th century, circa 1810. It is the typical model Horse Pistol used by British Cavalry throughout the British Empire and the EIC.

It was then converted in the 1830’s to the Percussion Cap system.

This fine pistol has a 9in regulation .650 calibre round steel barrel, struck with London proof marks, which include the CROWN / CP black powder proof for muzzle loaders, as well as the CROWN / V viewed mark. There are also possible inspection marks, the letter “K” above an “8” and a string of letters and numbers, along the barrel:

APX-1381-EX-73

At the tip, it is fitted with a working stirrup ramrod designed for use by the cavalry on horseback. The flat steel spring is stamped with the letters “JP”.

It comes with a beautiful walnut stock that is stamped on one side with the rampant lion logo of the East India Company (adopted in 1808) together with what I believe is the gun stockers/sellers name: WILKINSON, possible the famous Wilkinson’s of Pall Mall London?

It is fitted with regulation brass mounts including a brass butt cap with large steel lanyard ring, brass trigger guard and a fore end cap.

The trigger mechanism has a large chequered and engraved trigger arm and the action is still firm and locks back securely on both half and full cock.

The side plate is also engraved with the rampant lion logo of the East India Company.

This pistol has an antique obsolete calibre and therefore it can be owned without any form of license.

It is not deactivated in any way and is being sold as a collector’s display piece only.

I have seen a few of these pistols over the years, but this is the finest example I have seen to date.

The stock is sound with no splits and only light age-related indentations. The barrel has a beautiful smooth finish and the trigger plate just has some light greying to the metal.

Overall, it measures 15.5” (39.4cm) long and weighs a heavy 1.37Kg.
