Antique Navy “NON-XLL” Rope Knife with Stag Horn Grips by Joseph Allen & Sons c1860

Here on offer is a fine example of an early version of a folding navy or whaler type rope knife with beautiful stag horn grips by the English maker, Joseph Allen & Sons, Sheffield, England, circa 1860.

Even though there are no military markings, I believe these knifes where used by both the British and American Navy’s during the American Civil War and through to the Boer War period.

The grip is made up from two beautiful dark coloured slabs of genuine stag horn, that are held in place by four hand made steel pins and the lanyard bale copper pin.

There are three small hairline cracks in the horn by the pins as they have rusted and expanded over the years.

At the top of the grip is a solid copper lanyard bale, which still retains a tight fit, but does swivel with a little force.

The square pointed blade has the maker’s trademark and name stamped on the ricasso, which is now very faint and hard to read;

NON–XLL
JOSEPH
ALLEN & SONS
SHEFFIELD

The blade now has an overall aged greying to the finish and some light pitting. There is a slight rounding to the square tip.

It is in excellent working order with firm full and half stops, when opened. There is a slight wobble when the blade is fully open.

The blade measures 3.75” (9.5cm) long and the knife is 9” (22.8cm) long when open, including the lanyard bale.

It weighs 155g.
