Rare City of Anzio Certificate with WW2 British Trio Medal Group to CPL William Hemsley – 109th Field Company - Royal Engineers

Here on offer is a rare opportunity to obtain a City of Anzio Certificate with WW2 British trio medal group to CPL William Hemsley, of 109th Field Company, Royal Engineers.

The genuine City of Anzio Certificate is in excellent original condition, retaining the colour to the ornate border. It does show slight tears to the edges and creases where it has been folded.

It shows the crest for Anzio at the top along with the words:

CITY OF ANZIO
CERTIFICATE OF HONOUR
TO
THOSE WHO FOUGHT SO VALIANTLY, WITHOUT FEARING FOR THEIR OWN LIVES, ON THE BEACHHEAD DURING THE BATTLE OF ANZIO
LEST WE FORGET
There is a photo image of the allies landing on the beachhead and below the words:

ANZIO BEACHHEAD RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION CENTER
ANZIO BEACHHEAD MUSEUM

The details of the British army soldier it has been awarded to have been handwritten in ink:

C.P.L William Hemsley
109 Field Company
Royal Engineers
No. 4627551

It is also signed by the then President, I assume of the museum, Patrizio Colantunono.

My understanding is the museum would/can issue a certificate to any of the brave soldiers who were part of the battle of Anzio, upon proof they were actually there on the day.

These Anzio certificates are rare to find and this is the only example I have come across I all the years of my collecting.

The Anzio Beachhead Museum is devoted to the Allied amphibious landing on 22 January 1944, along the coastline between Anzio and Nettuno, in Italy.

The museum opened in 1994 for the 50th Anniversary of the landing. It comprises four sections: American, British, German and Italian. The exhibitions feature authentic uniforms, badges, documents, pictures and other artefacts donated by veteran organisations.

The Battle of Anzio was a battle of the Italian Campaign of WW2 that took place from January 22nd, 1944. The battle began with the Allied amphibious landing known as Operation Shingle, and finally ended on June 4, 1944 with the liberation of Rome.

The full-size medal group consists of:

The 1939 – 1945 Star with ribbon
The Italy Star with ribbon
War medal with ribbon

All the medals and ribbons are in excellent untouched original condition; no nicks or dents to the medals and the Stars have a beautiful darkened age patina to their finish.

They also come with the original O.H.M.S. cardboard “postal” case with his address in Leeds, on the front.

Inside it still has three official leaflets that were issued with the medals at the time. Please see photos.

The group has a combined weight of 110g.
