Fine Original Post 1802 East India Company New Land Pattern Flintlock Service Pistol - PARKER

Here on offer is an original Post 1802 East India Company (EIC) New Land Pattern Flintlock Service Pistol, .65 calibre, possibly by W. PARKER.

The New Land Pattern pistols were first produced for the British service in 1802. The swivel rammer and raised semi-water proof pan marked a technological advance in flintlock pistols. The 9” (23cm) barrel and .65 calibre of the earlier patterns were retained. The flat butt-plate and lanyard ring are unique to the EIC pattern and this style of stock remained the basis of all subsequent pistols in EIC service.

This fine pistol has a 9in regulation .65 calibre round steel barrel, struck with London proof marks, which include the CROWN over CP, black powder proof for muzzle loaders, as well as the CROWN over V, the viewed mark.

There are also further marks, the CROWN over 9 and CROWN over 10 and then letters J.L.

Along the barrel there are a string of letters and numbers:

APX-1115-FX-73

At the tip, it is fitted with a working stirrup ramrod originally designed for use by the cavalry on horseback.

It comes with a beautiful walnut stock that is stamped on one side (now faint) with the rampant lion logo of the East India Company together with the name:

PARKER

and the letters: J M

There is also a double stamp of the CROWN over 1 inspection mark, by the trigger guard.

I believe the name PARKER may relate to the maker of the pistol, being W. PARKER.

Now William Parker worked at 233 High Holborn, 1793-1841; 10 Chamber Street 1839 - 41. Gunmaker to the Duke of Kent, Prince Edward and William IV. He held contracts to ordnance, East India Company and The Hudson's Bay Company. Supplied arms to the London Police from 1803 and Metropolitan Police from 1829. Died aged 68 in 1841. Succeeded by Park Field and Sons.

The pistol is also fitted with regulation brass mounts including a brass butt cap, stamped with the number 12, along with a large steel lanyard ring. There is a brass trigger guard and a brass fore end cap.

The trigger mechanism has a plain trigger arm and the action is still very firm and locks back securely on both half and full cock. It still retains a leather patch and section of flint that produces a bright set of sparks against the strike plate.

The side plate is also engraved with the rampant lion logo of the East India Company and a CROWN over 3 inspection mark.

This pistol has an antique obsolete calibre and therefore it can be owned without any form of license.

It is not deactivated in any way and is being sold as a collector’s display piece only.

I have seen a few of these pistols over the years, but this is the finest example I have seen to date.

The stock is sound with no splits and only light age-related marks. The barrel has a beautiful smooth finish and the trigger plate just has some light greying to the metal.

Overall, it measures 15.5” (39.4cm) long and weighs a heavy 1.36Kg.
