Antique Oak and Copper Memorial Walking Stick made from Salvaged parts from H.M.S. FOUDROYANT – Nelsons flagship c1897

Here on offer is a fine antique memorial oak walking stick with a copper collar, made from salvaged parts of H.M.S. Foudroyant, Admiral Nelsons flagship c1897.

The Victorians often salvaged parts of famous ships and made them into souvenirs.

This walking stick shaft and handle are made from the oak of HMS Foudroyant and the detailed copper collar was made from the original copper rivets that held the ship together.

The copper collar is impressed in three sections:

The image of Lord Nelson surrounded by the words:

HORATIO VISCOUNT NELSON
BORN SEP 1753
DIED OCT 1805

A blank cartouche shield stating:

OAK AND COPPER FROM VESSEL …AFTER BREAKING UP

The image of a battleship stating:

FOUDROYANT NELSON’S FLAGSHIP
COMMENCED 1789
LAUNCHED 1798,
WRECKED BLACKPOOL 1897

along with a Reg no 311490 that dates to 1898.

HMS Foudroyant was Nelson’s flag ship between 16th June 1799 and 31st June 1801.

It was an 80-gun third rate of the Royal Navy, one of only two British built 80 gunships of the period (the other was HMS Caesar).

HMS Foudroyant was built in the dockyard at Plymouth Dock and launched on 31 March 1798.

It served Nelson as his flagship from 6 June 1799 until the end of June 1801.
HMS Foudroyant had a long and successful career, and although she was not involved in any major fleet action, she did provide invaluable service to numerous admirals throughout her 17 years on active service.

In her last years she became a training vessel for boys.

She had a really long and interesting life at sea before being broken up in 1897 after she ran aground.

It’s in excellent condition with no damage or repairs.
