WW2 Japanese Type 30 Arisaka Bayonet and Scabbard with Repaired Grip

Here on offer is WW2 Japanese Type 30 Arisaka bayonet and scabbard with a war damaged but repaired grip.

The Type 30 was the primary kind of bayonet used on Japanese rifles during WW2 and was introduced in 1897. They were produced in 18 distinct manufacturing patterns.

I think this bayonet is a later war example, with a blued and fullered blade, a straight contoured crossguard and now contoured wooden grip.

This example has been through the wars, literally, with the metal pommel being broken off of the tang.

I was told this was due to battle damage but who can say for sure?

Somebody has taken the time to hand carve a pair of contoured wooden grips with a bird’s head pommel, that actually fit well. It could at least then be used as a short sword, if not a true rifle bayonet.

On the ricasso of the blade, you can just make out the Nagoya Army Arsenal mark and Toyoda Automatic Loom Works mark.

The round figure-8 like mark is the Nagoya Army Arsenal mark, that represents two Shachi (Golden Dolphins). Shachi were mythical creatures with the body of a carp and the head of a tiger.

The Toyoda maker mark depicts the Kanji inside a diamond.

Toyoda Automatic Loom Works began producing automobiles in 1933. In 1937, the automobile department became a separate company which grew into what is known today as Toyota Motor Sales.

Toyoda made bayonets from 1938–1945, under Nagoya supervision.

It has a 15.5” (39.5cm) long single edged fullered blade, that shows some loss of blueing and pitting to the finish. The very tip is also now bent over.

The black painted straight cross guard is slightly pitted, but seems to be undamaged.

It comes with its original metal scabbard that looks to have been repainted black at some point and it has a slight ding to the lower edge section.

So certainly not a mint example but makes an interesting and good display bayonet.

The bayonet is 20.5” (52cm) in total length and weighs 575g.
