Here on offer is a fine early example of a Royal Life Saving Society medal that was awarded to a

R. CAVILL in October 1931.

The bronze medal is in excellent condition and retains all its fine detailing with a fine age patina finish to the metal.

It is approximately 1.2” (3cm) diameter with a claw and suspension ring at the top.

The obverse depicts the early version of a rescuer towing a victim through the water, with the shore in the distance. Around the outer edge are the words: “THE LIFE SAVING SOCIETY ESTABLISHED 1891”

On the reverse, around the outer edge are the words: "Quemcunque Miserum Videris Hominem Scias" which when translated from the Latin means, "Whomsoever you see in distress, recognise in him fellow man." This is the motto of the society.

In the centre are the words:

It comes with its original hinged and recessed red leatherette presentation case, with “The Royal Life Saving Society”, in gold lettering on the top.


The Royal Life Saving Society UK is a drowning prevention charity founded in 1891 in the UK. It has had Royal Patronage since 1904. The Royal Life Saving Society UK is a national charity, founded in 1891 by William Henry, with the aim of Safeguarding lives in, on and near water. The Society has more than 13,000 members in 48 branches and 170 active lifesaving and lifeguarding clubs it trains over 93% of all pool and beach lifeguards throughout the UK and Ireland. The Society has had Royal Patronage since 1904 starting with King Edward VII. HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO is the current Commonwealth President of the Society. It is based in the Midlands town of Worcester, Worcestershire. The RLSS is part of Royal Lifesaving Society Commonwealth, and the International Life Saving Federation.
