WW2 British Folding Machete with by A.H. Bisby of Sheffield with Original Leather Lanyard dated 1944

Here on offer is an unmodified original WW2 British Folding Machete with by A.H. Bisby of Sheffield with Original Leather Lanyard, dated 1944

In 1942, the Camillus Cutlery Company of New York introduced the U.S. Army’s Camillus Folding Survival Machete. It was initially issued to U.S. aircrew members and was designed to be carried folded in a pack attached to parachutes. The introduction of the American machete served as the inspiration for the production of a British version. The British variant differs from the American one only in the inclusion of a lanyard ring and leather lanyard.

This example is in “untouched” condition as a lot of collectors what to find such items. The metal would clean up a lot with some metal polish, but in my opinion, it looks 100% correct just left in this condition.

The massive blade has age darkening and pitting on both sides and the single cutting edge shows signs of service sharpening.

At the ricasso, it is stamped with the British “broad arrow”, date and maker’s name:

1944
A.H. BISBY & Co Ltd
SHEFFIELD

The machete’s folding mechanism is operated by a thumb release lever near the cross-guard.

The lever is stamped with the number “31”.

The very strong mechanism works perfectly and the machete folds up as originally designed.

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN FOLDING THE BLADE!

The black composite grip plates are in good original condition but one does have some slight “bubbling” to the finish and is stamped with an inspection mark, being the “broad arrow” above the number 7. They are riveted in place.
The shape of the grip was not very comfortable and a lot of these machetes have been modified to fit the hand. It is now unusual to find the grips in their original condition.

This British version features the correct lanyard ring and retains its scarce original leather lanyard, that is attached with a swivel clip.

This example is now missing the black painted metal blade edge protector.

The machete OPEN measures about 15.5” (39.4cm) long, when CLOSED measures 11.4” (28.8cm) and the blade measures 10” (25.4cm) long.

It weighs a heavy 760g.
