Unusual Pair of Vintage Trench Art Royal Navy “Squid/Limbo” A/S 12 - Brass Shell Cases

Here on offer is an unusual pair of vintage trench art Royal Navy, ahead throwing anti-submarine weapon system, Squid/Limbo A/S 12, brass shell cases.

My understanding is that the Limbo weapon system was the final development of the ahead-throwing anti-submarine weapon Squid, designed during WW2.

Limbo was installed on the quarterdeck of Royal Navy escort ships from 1955 to the mid-1980s. Limbo was widely employed by the Royal Canadian, being incorporated into all destroyer designs from the late 1950s to the early 1970s and the Type 12 President Class frigates built for the South African Navy in the 1960s.

The weapon was used in the 1982 Falklands War and remained in service in the Royal Navy and Commonwealth navies until the 1990s.

The cut down brass shell cases have been painted inside, one green and one red and each one has silver plated Royal Navy badge fixed to the front.

The brass shell cases now have a bright polished finish, which makes it hard to get detailed photos but they are much better in the “flesh” than the photos.

The bases show the stamped British ordinance marks that read as:

A/S
12
LOT 39 N & 17 N
ECC
1965 & 1962
FV
WD Arrow

These markings relate too:

Manufactured by ECC - Edward Curran, Cardiff in 1965 and 1962, Lot 30 N & 17 N which denote a Naval store.

FV - Examiner’s mark, that seems to have examined most of Curran’s A/S cases.

Both cases also have a No. 38 Mk 1 electric primer
manufactured by BE - ROF Blackburn, 1965

Filled by CY - ROF Chorley, one in 1961, Lot 7 & 1962 Lot 16.

This unusual pair of vintage “Trench Art” cases would make a great addition to any Royal Navy collection.

Each case measures 2.5” (6.4cm) tall by 3” (7.6cm) diameter at the base.

Together they weigh a heavy 1.2Kg.
