Unusually Long Antique Mahogany Fleam Stick (4) c1870
Here on offer is an unusual longer version of a 19th century hardwood Mahogany fleam stick, also known as a bleeder bat or blood stick, circa 1870.
This fleam stick is in excellent condition, having been skilfully turned from a finely grained Mahogany wood, that now has just a few minor usage dings to its finish.
These sticks where used in conjunction with a fleam (see my item 51771), for the purpose of bloodletting on animals and sometimes on humans as well!
The blade of the fleam is positioned by the area that is to be bled and then the back of the blade is struck sharply with the 'business end' of the club making a swift and supposedly less painful incision.
It measures 10” (25.4cm) long by 1” (2.5cm) diameter and weighs 120g.
Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
