Edwardian Period Malacca Walking Stick or Cane with Plain Sterling Silver Domed Top c1900

Here on offer is an antique Edwardian period Malacca walking stick or cane with a plain sterling silver domed top, circa 1900.

The silver dome top has a plain bright finish and is stamped with the words: STERLING SILVER.

It now has a number of shallow age related indentations, especially on the very top and a hairline split on the side about 1.5cm long. The silver top is still very solid and fits securely in place making it a very usable cane.

The main shaft is made from Malacca cane, that actually comes from the brown, often mottled stem of the Calamus scipionum rattan palm, a species native to Southeast Asia, and traditionally exported from the Malaysian city of Malacca.

Malacca cane has been used in the craft of umbrella and walking stick making for over 100 years.

The canes are known for their smooth, often mottled brown colour, which is a result of mud splatters during the monsoon season.

This cane is in excellent undamaged condition and it retains its smooth and wonderful colour.

At the end of the cane it has a large ferrule, with a brass collar and hard wearing circular steel disc.

The cane measures 35” (89cm) long and the main shaft is approximately 1.1” (2.8cm) diameter.

It weighs 310g.
