Impressive Ornate 19th Century Indo-Persian/Afghan Pesh-Kabz Dagger with Crafted Leather Covered Scabbard

Here on offer is an impressive and ornate decorated example of a 19th Century Indo Persian/Afghan Pesh-Kabz dagger with a brass inlaid leather covered wooden sheath.

The 19th Century Indo-Persian/Afghan Pesh-Kabz Dagger is a traditional straight-bladed weapon that originates from the Indian subcontinent, Persia (modern-day Iran), and Afghanistan. These blades are highly prized for their craftsmanship, durability, and effectiveness in close combat and they have become very collectible items, particularly due to their historical and cultural significance.

The Pesh-Kabz, with its reinforced spine and pointed blade, was specifically designed to penetrate armour, especially chainmail, making it a favoured weapon in regions where such armour was still in use during the 18th and 19th centuries.

This example is a high-end version that features a traditional curved grip made from four sections of smooth bone or other similar natural occurring material from that period. These sections now show some wonderful natural hairline age lines, which are held in place against the copper lined tang with domed silver pins. The integratory of the grip is perfectly solid.

The curved grip fits comfortably in the hand and provides excellent control for both slashing and stabbing movements, especially when the fingers rest against the short finger guard/crossguard.

The base of the grip and the whole edge of the grip tang have been covered with low grade silver/white metal, that has been hand engraved with intricate designs. Often these designs feature inscriptions or symbols representing the owner’s family, tribe, or allegiance.

The straight 10.25” hollow-ground, tempered steel single-edged full-tang blade, has a thick spine bearing a "T" cross-section for strength and rigidity. These daggers were designed to penetrate chain mail and other types of armour, so they are of very solid construction. The blade is broad at the hilt, but tapers progressively and radically to a needle-like, triangular tip. It is in excellent condition but now has a dull grey finish with some slight dark pitting marks towards the tip, that may clean off.

It comes with its original finely crafted leather covered wooden scabbard that is stitched in place on the back.

On the front has some ornate inlaid brass rings set into a pattern at the top and the remaining leather has a hand embossed pattern along its length. It is in excellent condition which is rare to find on such antique examples.

A lot of these daggers were brought back by British Trooper's from the Second Anglo-Afghan War during Queen Victoria's reign.

A rare chance to acquire a truly fine example of these distinctive daggers.

The blade measures 10.25” (26cm) and the knife itself measures 14.5” (37cm) long.

It weighs 320g.
