Near Mint ERII Royal Navy Master-at Arms Warrant Officer’s 1827/32 Pattern Sword by ‘Pooley Sword London’ with Scabbard and Dress Knot c2007
Here on offer is a near mint ERII Royal Navy Master-at Arms Warrant Officer’s 1827/32 pattern sword by ‘Pooley Sword London’ with its original scabbard and dress knot circa 2007, that is in parade ground condition.
In 1827, Masters, Mates, Master's Assistants and Midshipmen were ordered to wear swords.
This was when the new pattern was introduced which is very similar to the present day sword.
In 1832, the Regulations stipulated that Warrant Officers should have black grips and a stepped pommel. (Warrant Officers included Gunners, Boatswains and Carpenters.)
The same sword with black grip and rounded pommel should be worn only by the Master–at-Arms and Warrant Officer ranks, which is still regulation today.
Pooley Sword still make these swords today, but they retail for over £1500!
This sword is the 1827/32 pattern and has a beautiful 31” single edged, ¾” fullered plain blade.
Acid etched on the ricasso it has the early Pooley Sword London crest on one side and on the other the Pooley maker’s logo.
On the top edge it is stamped with a serial number P23521, which indicates it was made around 2007.
The blade is in near mint condition with just some very light grey spots, near the ricasso.
The beautiful anchor detailed gilt brass hilt guard and domed and stepped pommel retain nearly all of the original gilt finish, with some very minor loss to the edges.
The black fish skin/shagreen grip is perfect and the grip wire is still held firmly in place.
The folding guard section works perfectly and locates properly onto the top scabbard locket’s retaining pin as it should, allowing the sword to rest easily against the wearer’s side when worn.
The gilt brass mounted leather scabbard is also in excellent condition, with minimal loss to the gilt.
It is fitted with a perfect black and gold dress knot and the sword sheathes and draws very well.
I believe these swords can still be used by serving British, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand naval officers as well as making a great addition to a discerning collector that only buys the best.
Some history about Pooley Sword
In August 2005, the very distinguished sword makers Wilkinson Sword, who had been established for over two hundred years, ceased trading as sword makers. Robert Pooley, who had been commissioning swords from Wilkinson’s for over forty years, purchased from Wilkinson’s their drawings, spares and much of their tooling, including both heavy and light machinery.
Pooley Sword was formed in November 2005 and has an outstanding reputation for craftsmanship.
Each sword is made in England specifically for each individual by highly skilled Sword Cutlers using traditional materials and methods, resulting in a genuine, traditional British sword.
All Pooley swords are forged from carbon steel and tested to the highest standards in the traditional way, as laid down by Henry Wilkinson.
The near mint steel blade measures 31” (78.8cm) long and the whole sword (blade in scabbard) measures 37.75” (96cm).
It weighs a heavy 1.1Kg.
