Unusual Antique Combined Celluloid Letter Opener - Penknife and Spike - Sheffield c1900

Here on offer is an unusual antique combined celluloid letter opener with penknife and spike, made in Sheffield, around 1900.

This antique ‘combination’ desk accessory has been very well made and consists of a 6.9” long shaped ivory coloured celluloid letter opener, that has a lined pattern so it looks like real ivory.

Pinned to one side with two steel pins, is a folding penknife and spike which has the same ivory coloured celluloid grip plate, securely pinned in place with three steel pins. There is now a small hairline crack by one of the pins.

The penknife/spike combo has brass liners and the blade is marked:

MADE IN
SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND

It has a 2” long single edged blade of the type that was used as a ‘quill cutter’ back in the later Victorian, early Edwardian period and it is in excellent condition.

The folding 2.2” steel spike is very thin and tappers to a sharp point. I am not sure what it was used for, maybe a pipe cleaning aid or even a cigar piercer?

I believe this fine and unusual piece would have adorned a gentleman’s writing desk, back in the Edwardian period and makes a great collectable and usable piece today.

The letter opener measures 6.9”” (17.5cm) long, the knife is 2” (5.2cm) long and the spike is 2.2” (5.5cm) long.

It weighs 46g.
