Royal Navy Officers Bicorn, Epaulettes & Sword Belt by Gieves with Transit Tin Case and named to P.H.G. Richardson RN
Here on offer is an impressive set of Royal Navy Officers dress uniform attire, consisting of a bicorn, epaulettes and a dress sword belt complete with its original Japanned transit tin case, circa 1935.
The set is in exceptional condition with almost no signs of wear, as clearly seen in the photos.
It is named to P.H.G. Richardson RN, which has been hand painted onto the lid of the tin case.
BICORN
The plush black fur dress bicorn has patterned black silk edging and on the right hand side, a black pleated silk cockade with a gold bullion wire corkscrew coil to the centre, held in place with a Kings head gilt Royal Navy button. Then at either end, beautiful gilt bullion coils are fitted in place.
Inside it has a pleated cream coloured silk liner and cream leather head band. The cream lining of the bicorn is marked with a King’s Royal Warrant and the manufacturer’s details in gilt letters:
Gieves Ltd, 21, Old Bond Street and 120 Princes Street Edinburgh.
It also has the size 6¾ stamped on a round label.
EPAULETTES
The gold bullion non-fringed epaulettes denote the rank of a Royal Navy Officer, Sub-Lieutenant. They both have silver bullion Royal Navy Anchors along with a King's Crown gilt button. They marked on the reverse with Gieves manufacturer’s details.
DRESS SWORD BELT & BUCKLE
The dress sword belt and hanging straps are made from black leather with two rows of gilt bullion wire and gilt washed hooks and King’s Crown RN anchor buckle.
The case is made of tin with a Japanned finish and a Gieves brass name crest fitted to the lid.
Inside it has a red velvet lining and a separate oval fixed tin with a removable lid to hold the dress belt, then the Bicorn fits snuggly over it and is held securely in place.
The epaulettes slot in place onto the two hinged retaining flaps.
Inside the main hinged lid is a flap that pulls open slightly, to hold paperwork or possibly even gloves, etc.
On the lid it has a working sliding padlock flap fitted.
The only issue with the tin case is that both of the thin lid hinges have broken apart, which means the back edge of the lid can just be lifted off. It might be possible to get them repaired?
The case measures 19” (48.3cm) wide by 9.5” (24cm) deep and is 8.9” (22.5cm) high.
The complete set weighs a heavy 5.7kg.
