19th Century English Spring Loaded Embossed Leather Shot Powder Flask with Hunting Scene
Here on offer is a 19th century spring loaded leather Shot Powder Flask embossed with a hunting scene, possibly by G & JW Hawksley of Sheffield.
The front of the leather pouch has an embossed scene of game caught on a hunt, hanging from a tree and they consist of a hare and partridges with a shotgun in the background.
I think the makers name was in raised lettering under the hunting image, but has been worn away over time, but this image is often seen on G & JW Hawksley shot flasks.
G & JW Hawksley were prolific makers of powder flasks and gun loading equipment. They were started in 1845 by brothers George and John William Hawksley. The company continued well into the 20th century.
The pouch still retains the steel suspension ring at the base and is fitted at the top with a brass, dual setting (1.1/4 and 1.1/2 oz), spring operated measure and loading spout mechanism.
The pouch is in good condition and the mechanism is in working order, but the leather is now hard and the pouch has been flattened so I would only use it for display purposes, albeit the leather could be softened, but they may affect the stitching.
This original piece is ideal for a collector or museum display being in good clean condition.
It measures 9.5” (24.3cm) long and 3.5” (9cm) wide across the wide part of the pouch.
It weighs 100g.
