Antique 9.75” China Plate by Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co Depicting the Bald Eagle Emblem of the American Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E)

Here on offer is a fine and early example of a 9.75” decorative ceramic plate, depicting the hand coloured transfer print image of a spread winged Bald eagle, being the early emblem of the American Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E), circa 1920.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international non-profit organization uniting fraternally in the spirit of liberty, truth, justice, and equality, to make human life more desirable by lessening its ills and promoting peace, prosperity, and hope.

The F.O.E. was founded in February, 1898 by six theatre owners gathered in a Seattle shipyard to discuss a musician’s strike. After addressing the matter, they agreed to “bury the hatchet” and form “The Order of Good Things.” As numbers grew, members selected the Bald Eagle as the official emblem and changed the name to “The Fraternal Order of Eagles.”

The scalloped edged white china plate is in excellent undamaged condition and special TST star marking on the reverse that relates to the famous American pottery makers, Taylor, Smith & Taylor Co.

Taylor, Smith & Taylor Company (TS&T) was in operation from 1900 until 1981 in Chester, West Virginia. The original owners were: Colonel John N. Talyor, C.A. Smith, Joseph G. Lee, Albert G. Mason, and William L. Smith. It was originally known as Taylor, Lee & Smith, but when Lee left the business early on, the pottery officially became Taylor, Smith & Taylor.

The plate measures 9.75” (24.8cm) diameter and weighs 620g.
