Rare Antique Double Bladed Pruning Knife with Stag Antler Grip by SAYNOR COOKE & RIDAL c1880

Here on offer is a rare antique double bladed pruning or copping knife with stag antler grip scales by SAYNOR COOKE & RIDAL of Sheffield, circa 1880.

SAYNOR are known for making top quality pruning knives, making them very collectable and in high demand.

This smaller double bladed stag grip version is a rare example that is in excellent condition.

Both of the curved carbon steel blades are tight and still snap open and shut with no wobble. They still both retain a sharp cutting edge.

On the larger blade you can just make out the last three letters of SAYNOR that are etched on one side, the other letters have been worn off over the years.

On one side of its ricasso it is stamped:

SAYNOR
COOKE &
RIDAL

Then on the other side it is stamped with:

OBTAIN
WARRANTED

OBTAIN being one of the marks that SAYNOR used.

On the smaller blade it is just stamped on one side on the ricasso with:

SAYNOR
COOKE &
RIDAL

Both blades show some aged “greying/staining” and fine scratch marks to the blade finish, but I think this would clean up a bit brighter, if that is your preference.

The curved grip fits perfectly in your hand and is made up of two slices of stag antler that have been shaped to form a tight fit to the steel blade liners, being held in place by four steel pins. The finish of the stag antler grips has been worn to a beautiful smooth glass like finish through years of use, which I personally love!

They are in excellent condition and complete, with just a tiny hairline crack on one side by the top steel pin that is hard to see.

The grip is finished with a steel bolster at one end and a flat steel pommel at the other.

This example will make a great addition to any antique knife collection and will only increase in value.

The larger blade measures 2.5” (6.3cm) with a 2” (5cm) cutting edge. The smaller bald measures 1.7” (4.2cm) with a 1.25” (3.3cm) cutting edge. When closed the grip measures 3.5” (9cm).

It weighs 72g.
