WW2 British Military Swiss made Pocket Watch Marked G.S.T.P. 198270 Retailed by Bravingtons London

Here on offer is a genuine WW2 British Military, Swiss made pocket watch, that was retailed by Bravingtons of London, circa 1940.

I have had it running for a few days now (winding it daily) but as with all mechanical pocket watches I can’t guarantee it will be working after a journey through the postal system. I will however securely wrap and protect it for transit and would recommend it would benefit from a professional service.

This type was the main pocket watch used by the British Military during WW2 and was known as the GSTP or GS/TP watch. This is believed to stand for General Service Time Piece or General Service Trade Pattern i.e. a watch bought from the watch trade.

As war broke out in 1939, the British military faced shortages and acquired Swiss-made pocket watches from various manufacturers, for precise timekeeping in the field. These GSTP watches, with 15-jewel movements, luminous dials, and subsidiary seconds, became essential tools for soldiers.

This example features a durable base metal chrome plated open-face case with the more unusual screw-on back and bezel. It has a top wind and pull knob to adjust the hands.

It also has the rarer and more desirable full black enamel dial with Arabic numerals, that appears to be undamaged. It originally would have had luminous hands and dial numbers at 3,6,9 and 12, but now there are just traces left of the original paint.

It has a subsidiary second’s dial at 6 o’clock, below which it is inscribed “Swiss Made”. There is no makers name that I can see on this example.
The glass appears to be original and has no significant scratches, just some discolouration around the edge where it joins the bezel.

On the back it is stamped with the British M.O.D. Broad Arrow symbol, GS/TP and the army reference/serial number 198270. It also is engraved with the retailer’s name, Bravingtons.

Inside it has a 15 jewel, lever escapement, Swiss movement, that is slightly tarnished/scratched and would benefit from a professional clean.

Inside the machine turned case cover it is stamped; SWISS MADE and has the serial number 3355618.

There is some loss of plating to the case, especially around the bezel as can be seen in my photos.

It measures 2.1” (5.2cm) diameter (excluding the winder) and weighs 93g.
