Unusual Moulded Owl Celluloid Letter Opener with Concealed Pencil Topped with a Crown

Here on offer is an unusual moulded owl celluloid letter opener with a concealed pencil that is topped with a crown.

The top handle section depicts the detailed image of a crowned owl, seated on what I think is an open book, set on a plinth, that is decorated in leaves and scrolled ribbons.

What is unusual about this piece is the fact the owl is shown wearing a crown, which is actually the top of a concealed pencil, that can just be pulled out to be used and then reinserted when not in use.

The owl and the top of the plinth has the remains of some dark brown paint, which has nearly all worn off now.

The flat blade section is now slightly curved but is in excellent undamaged condition.

This piece is hard to date and it doesn’t have any maker’s details, but I would say it was probably made around 1900, possibly in Germany?

It measures 8.2” (20.5cm) long end to end and the pencil is 3.5” (9cm) long.

It weighs 10.8g.
