ANDENKEN
an das jahr 1909

The soldiers are in uniform but clearly relaxing, as two of them have cigarettes in their hands and one is resting his arm on the shoulder of another.

There were no major battles fought by the Imperial German Army in 1909. The year was relatively peaceful, with the army focusing on training and strategic planning for potential future conflicts. The Bosnian Crisis of 1908-1909, while tense, did not escalate into military conflict involving Germany.

Tintypes, also known as ferrotypes or melainotypes, were a type of photograph popular in the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, including the early 1900s when the images were often sold as souvenirs. They were created by applying a photographic emulsion to a thin sheet of iron coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. While tintypes were most popular from the 1860s to the 1870s, they continued to be produced into the early 1900s.

This is a rare example of this type of tintype that is in great condition, with very clear images with some light scratches and one tiny rust spot.

The paper frame measures 4” (10cm) by 4.75” (12cm) and weighs 13g.
