WW2 Italian POW made Aluminium Trench Art Cigarette Case Depicting a Horse and Dog
Here on offer is a fine example of a WW2 Italian POW made aluminium trench art cigarette case.
I have been told that these cigarette cases were made by Italian POW's captured by the British Forces in North Africa in WW2. Apparently, these were traded for food and cigarettes by the Italian POWs.
The cases were made using the aluminium frames of downed aircraft from the North African front.
Each case was then individually hand engraved and therefore each one is unique!
On the front of this wonderful example, it has a been hand engraved with a horse’s head set inside a horse shoe with plant leaves and the owners initials “F H”.
The back of the case is also hand engraved but with a dog or wolfs head set within a diamond frame, surrounded with some leaves.
Inside the case both sides have an ornate hand engraved symmetrical design, surrounding a large blank rectangle.
On one side it has been fitted with an elastic cigarette retaining strap.
The case is opened by pressing an aluminium catch at the edge of the case, which still works perfectly as does the hinge.
The case itself is in excellent condition with no cracks or splits. The aluminium has a nice smooth feel and almost shiny finish.
The case measures 5.9” (15cm) wide by 3” (7.6cm) high and 0.5” (1.2cm) thick.
It weighs 102g.
