Unusual Antique Victorian White Bisque Porcelain Boots Match Holder with Striker Plate c1874
Here on offer is an unusual antique English match holder with a stricker plate, that has been made out of fine white bisque porcelain, to look like a pair of military or Victorian riding boots.
One boot is standing upright and is designed to hold matches while the other boot is laying half folded on its side with a ridged base to the soul of the boot that acts as a stricker plate.
On the base of the upright boot is an English registered design “Diamond Mark”.
During the period 1842-1883 the British Patent Office issued a diamond mark along with the registration number when a design was registered.
As well as showing that the design had been registered, diamond mark offered the buyer the reassurance of knowing an item was of British design. It also assured the person registering the design a degree of protection from copying. The protection was dependent on the type of material and the class in which the product was placed.
There are two ranges of year codes; 1842-1867 & 1868-1883.
This mark relates to the period 1868-1883 and translates to the 8th August 1874.
It is in excellent, undamaged condition, which is rare to find, given it is now over 150 years old!
The erect boot measures 2.9” (7.3cm) tall, and the boots are 3” (7.5cm) wide at the base.
It weighs 73g.
