Antique Victorian Truncheon or Billy Club with a Bulbous Shaped Lead Weighted Head c1870
Here on offer is an unusual antique Victorian truncheon or billy club with a bulbous shaped, lead weighted head, circa 1870
This truncheon looks to have been made from walnut that has had a dark varnish applied to it, which now shows small areas of loss. It now has a beautiful aged patina to the finish and just feels “comfortable’ to hold with the weighted head.
It has a ribbed shaft that is still has the remnants of the original wide leather strap, held in place with twine.
The bulbous shaped head, has had a section of lead inserted into the top, that has been disguised with a thick black paint or varnish.
The addition of the lead makes this a weighty and impressive weapon.
The head also has a strange raised beaded pattern worked into the wood?
It is in great condition, with just a few age-related usage dents and minimal slight aged cracks.
It measures 15.6” (39.5cm) long by 2.25” (5.7cm) diameter at the wide head.
It weighs 380g.
