Unusual Large Bowie Knife with 10.5” Blade etched with details of England’s World Cup win in 1966 with Leather Sheath
Here on offer is an unusual large bowie knife with 10.5” clip point blade, etched with details of England’s world cup win in 1966, along with its original leather sheath.
I have come across this type of knife a few times, some have a plain blade, some are etched with “Remember the Alamo”, but I have never seen one with the details of England’s world cup win in 1966?
This is possible a unique piece that an England fan had professionally engraved, after England won the world cup?
The blades never seem to have a maker’s mark or name, but one did have a sheath stamped with BELL BOWIE MADE IN SHEFFIELD.
Therefore, it is possible the Belle Bowie Company made these knives in the 1960’s? Who knows!
This knife has a 10.5” steel clip point blade that still holds a sharp cutting edge. There are now signs of light pitting on both sides of the flat blade surfaces. There are also signs of some crude sharpening to the cutting edge, that could be easily rubbed smooth.
On one side of the blade, it has been engraved with:
8TH WORLD CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
FINAL PLAYED AT WEMBLEY LONDON
JULY 30TH 1966
ENGLAND 4 WEST GERMANY 2
There is also an engraved swirling pattern at each end of the words.
The thick oval shaped finger/crossguard is made from polished brass and now has the tiniest movement against the grip.
On this version, the grip is made up from two moulded black composite slabs, with a wood graining effect that are in excellent undamaged condition.
They are securely held in place against the knife tang by three steel flat head rivets.
This knife retains its light brown leather stitched and riveted sheath, with a fastening strap and buckle at the top. There are some light marks to its finish, but it is in undamaged and excellent condition.
At the top there are two slots cut through the leather flap, to enable it to be fitted to a belt.
The knife has clearly been used, but is still in excellent condition and would make a great addition for any Bowie knife collector, especially if they are an England supporter!
The blade measures 10.5” (26.8cm) long and the knife is 16.2” (41cm) in total length.
With the scabbard, it weighs a heavy 775g.
