Unusual Large Antique Folding Lock-Back Knife with Chequered Wood Grip by Joseph Rodgers & Sons c1880
Here on offer is a large antique folding lock-back knife with chequered wood grip by Joseph Rodgers & Sons, circa 1880.
I have owned this knife for many years but struggled to identify the maker. Whilst researching other knives I came across the stamped image of ‘No 6’ (an ‘N’ with a lower case ‘o’ above an underscore dash) which you can just make out stamped on the ricasso of this knife. Below the No6 you can just make out the word ENGLAND. This is the number for the famous Jospeh Rodgers & Sons address, No.6 Norfolk Street, Sheffield.
The only other makings on the blade, is the word SHEFFIELD that is stamped on the front, near the nail pull. The knife has clearly seen a ‘life’ and the blade has been over cleaned, probably removing any other makers marks that may have existed?
The clip-point blade is 5.25” long with a 4.75” cutting edge, that still holds a good edge with no visible nicks.
It now shows some dark staining and light grinding marks to the finish and the tip has a sight curve.
The blade pulls open easily and locks firmly in place amazingly, with no wobble, against the large steel bolster.
Then to close the blade, you just push down on the semi-circular steel latch on the top edge of the grip, which releases the catch and it can be folded closed.
The grip scales are made from wood, possibly oak that has been finished with a chequered pattern. They are in great condition with just some minor dings and a tiny slither missing from the top edge.
They are pinned securely in place, to the steel liners by steel pins on both sides and at the end it retains a copper lanyard swivel loop.
This knife is clearly not mint, but appears to be an unusual example of large lock back knife, by this famous Sheffield knife maker.
The blade measures 5.25” (13.4cm) long with a cutting edge of 4.75” (12.2cm) and the knife itself is a total of 11.6” (29.5cm) long when open, excluding the lanyard loop.
It weighs 150g.
