Original WW1 British Officers Private Purchase Leather Revolver Holster with Belt Loop and Swing Hook Fittings – Colt New Service Mk I Revolver
Here on offer is a fine example of an original WW1 British Officers “private purchase” leather revolver holster with belt loop and two swivel spring hook fittings, probably for the much rarer, Colt New Service Mk I Revolver.
Given the quality of this piece, I believe this would have been an officer’s “private purchase” holster and there are no maker’s marks or military marks that I can see, which is also normal for private purchased items.
The front has the wide flap strap and brass securing nipple.
The back retains the wide flat belt loop that is securely stitched in place and looks to have never been used? It has also been fitted with two swivel spring hooks, on short leather straps, that would be used to hang it from a Sam Browne belt, instead of using the belt loop, which some officer’s favoured.
The leather stitching is all still in place, even around the circular disc at the bottom.
The leather is in excellent condition; there is just some slight cracking to the surface finish on the top of the flap and along the front edge of the holster.
The brass spring hooks and flap stud now have an aged patina to the finish, which would polish bright if that is your preference.
I think it could be used for any of the Webley .455 range or revolvers, even those with a 6” barrel. However, I think it is more likely to have been made to be used with slightly narrower, Colt New Service Mk I revolver. During WW1, the British Army used the Colt New Service revolver, specifically the .455 Eley model, to supplement their standard-issue Webley revolvers. The British military acquired approximately 60,000 of these revolvers from Colt due to increased demand during the war. Therefore, a holster for the Colt is much rarer to find than for the Webley.
It measures approximately 13.75” (35cm) from the top corner point of the flap to the tip and weighs 280g.
