WW2 Trench Art Folding Pocket Compass made from Bakelite and Aluminium with Initials JWM

Here on offer is an unusual WW2 period “trench art” Folding Pocket Compass made from Bakelite and Aluminium with the initials JWM.

This unusual compass came with a small collection of WW2 period pieces, of which this was the only piece that was marked with the initials JWM.

It has been well made with an aluminium outer cover and a two piece red Bakelite swivel loop that has been pinned together to hold a circular magnifying lens.

On one side of the outer cover, it is stamped with the initials:

JWM

On the other side are the same initials, just in italics.

Clearly this folding compass was made by a JWM or for someone with the initials JWM?

The loop swivels out from the main body and provides excellent crisp and clear magnification with no damage to the lens.

This is the only handmade folding compass I have ever had the privilege to own in all the years of my collecting. It was most likely made on one of the many WW2 British military engineering bases during WW2, from spare or recovered parts.

When folded closed it measures 2.25” (5.8cm) long and with the loop is fully open, it measures 3.9” (9.9cm) long. The magnifying lens is 1” (2.4cm) diameter.

It weighs 14g.
