Antique British Metropolitan Police Lignum Vita Truncheon Stamped with ‘M Crown P’ c1888
Here on offer is an antique Victorian British Metropolitan Police lignum vitae truncheon, stamped with ‘M Crown P’, circa 1888.
My understanding is the Metropolitan Police ‘M P’ stamp with a ‘Crown’ in between, only appeared after 1887. Earlier versions were stamped with an ‘M P’ below a ‘Crown’.
This fine example of a Victorian truncheon, still retains its original leather wrist strap, that is still complete, bit is in a delicate frayed condition.
This truncheon has a finely turned grip, a flat top and a long smooth lower shaped section.
It appears to be made from lignum vitae or possibly a very dense wood?
The truncheon is in excellent condition with just some some light scratches/rub marks.
The truncheon itself measures 15.5” (39.5cm) long, by 1.4” (3.5cm) diameter at the wide end.
It weighs a heavy 370g.
