Vintage RAF Lossiemouth - Robbie Burns, Limited Edition White Ceramic Scottish Quaich Drinking Vessel by W Bates & Co.
Here on offer is an unusual vintage RAF Lossiemouth commissioned, Robbie Burns, limited edition white ceramic Scottish Quaich drinking vessel, by W Bates & Co.
I believe this Quaich was most likely commissioned by a the Royal Airforce to be used in the senior NCO’s mess at RAF Lossiemouth, making it a rare and highly collectable piece.
The Quaich (from the Gaelic "cuach" - cup) is the traditional Scots' drinking vessel for whisky; its distinctive style of shallow bowl and shapely "lugs" dating its design back to medieval times.
On this Quaich there are some decorative gold lines painted on the top of the two lugs, then on the inside of the bowl there is a clear blue transfer printed portrait of Robbie Burns. Associated with Burns, on front edge, also in blue lettering is one of his famous phrases:
“O Scotland, but I’ll suffer for ye the morn.”
The line "O Scotland, but I’ll suffer for ye the morn" is a line from Robert Burns' poem "Scotch Drink," written in 1785. The poem uses strong, dialect-filled language to praise whisky, which Burns saw as a symbol of Scottish identity and a source of pleasure despite its potential for causing suffering. The phrase reflects the complex relationship between Scotland, its people, and the hardships associated with the national spirit, even as it brings joy and camaraderie.
On the other side of the bowl in blue lettering it states:
WO’s & SENIOR NCOs” MESS
