Rare Victorian Embroidery Sewing Scissors with a Gilt Metal Case in the Shape of a Renaissance Style Dagger c1890
Here on offer is a rare small pair of Victorian embroidery sewing scissors in their gilt metal case, in the shape of a Renaissance style dagger, circa 1890.
There is gilt suspension chains attached to the dagger crossguard that in turn connect to an ornate silver coloured mount, that is also fitted with a gilt chain and lobster claw catch, that could be clipped to a chatelaine.
The little scissors blades are tight with sharp points and the metal spring is intact and works well.
The top of the sheath is decorated with ornate silver filigree work on both sides.
Similar pieces are shown on p. 166 of Cummins & Taunton's book Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance and on p. 116 of Gay Ann Rogers' book An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools.
The set is in excellent condition and the gilt finish now has a nice patina finish.
It would make a wonderful addition to any sewing collection, especially those who have a particular interest in chatelaines.
The dagger (scissors) in the sheath measure 3.5” (9cm) long and it is 6" (15.2cm) from the lobster clip at the top of the chain to the bottom of the sheath.
The scissors (with the dagger grip) measure 2.8” (7.2cm) long and the cutting blades are 0.6” (1.5cm) long.
It weighs 19g.
