Antique Cutthroat Corn Razor with Fine Steel Blade, Ivorine Grip and Original Card Case c1880
Here on offer is an antique cutthroat corn razor with a fine steel straight blade, ivorine grip and its original card case, circa 1880.
During the late 1800's a number of cutlery firms manufactured a uniquely styled razor. The razor was much smaller than an average cutthroat razor and was produced to serve a purpose other than shaving.
The style was called "Corn Razor" and was used to remove corns from a person’s feet.
This fine example has a steel blade that is stamped on one side with:
CORN
RAZOR
and on the other side it has a maker’s mark, that looks like an egg in an eggcup and the words:
FINE
STEEL
I haven’t been able to find out who the maker is, but a lot were made in Germany in the 1880’s.
The blade now shows areas of darkening and surface scratches where it has been sharpened over the years.
The grip looks to be made from Ivorine or other imitation ivory/bone and is in excellent condition.
The razor comes with its original card ‘two-piece’ case, that pulls apart and is stamped on the top; CORN RAZOR.
It is now in a very scuffed condition, but has clearly managed to keep the razor protected and in excellent condition.
The 2.25” straight razor has a 1.5” (3.7cm) cutting edge. Open the razor measures 5.2” (13cm) long with a 3” (7.6cm) long grip.
With the case it weighs 18g.
