Unusual Antique English 1879 Hallmarked Silver Cross Potent Pendant by George Unite

Here on offer is a really rare antique English 1879 hallmarked silver Cross Potent pendant, by the highly regarded silversmith, George Unite of Birmingham, England.

I really can’t believe this pendant was made nearly 150 years ago! The style is so plain and sharp it looks to be a modern made piece and can easily be worn today.

A Cross Potent, is also known as a crutch cross, is a type of heraldic cross where each arm ends in a crossbar resembling a crutch or T-shape. The name "potent" comes from the old word for crutch, and this design is also sometimes called a Jerusalem cross because of its historical use by the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
On the reverse there is a clear set of English silver hallmarks, a young Queen Victoria’s head facing left, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “e” for the year 1879.

It also shows the makers mark that are the letters “GU”, that relates to the silversmith George Unite of Birmingham, England.

The pendant is in excellent condition with just some very light surface scratches. And still retains its silver suspension ring.

It measures 1.4” (3.4cm) square and 0.07” (1.9mm) thick.

It weighs 13.5g of solid sterling silver
