WW1 Bruce Bairnsfather 6” Commemorative Plate/Plaque Depicting “Old Bill” and the words “WHEN THE ‘ELL IS IT GOIN' TO BE STRAWBERRY?”
Here on offer is a WW1 Bruce Bairnsfather 6” commemorative plate/plaque depicting “Old Bill” and the words “WHEN THE ‘ELL IS IT GOIN' TO BE STRAWBERRY?”.
Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather was a prominent British humourist and cartoonist. His best-known cartoon character is Old Bill. Bill and his pals Bert and Alf featured in Bairnsfather's "Fragments from France" cartoons published weekly in The Bystander magazine during WW1.
This plate/plaque depicts a central cartoon in sepia tones, of Alfred with a tin of Plum & Apple, and the caption, “WHEN THE ‘ELL IS IT GOIN' TO BE STRAWBERRY?”.
I believe this cartoon design dates to around 1915.
On the back it features the GRIMWADES of Stoke on Trent logo in black.
There is also a description in black ink on a green background, that reads:
MADE BY THE GIRLS OF STAFFORDSHIRE DURING THE WINTER OF 1917 WHEN BOYS WERE IN THE TRENCHES FIGHTING FOR LIBERTY AND CIVILIZATION.
The plate has a tiny chip to the back of the rim and now has age crazing/cracks to the glaze finish and wear to the gilded rim.
It measures 6” (15.2cm) diameter and weighs 148g.
