Original WW1 British Military “TEL. SIG (MK III) ALSO G.S.” Three-Draw Brass Telescope by W OTTWAY & Co Ltd, Ealing 1915
Here on offer is an original WW1 British military “TEL. SIG (MK III) ALSO G.S.” three-draw brass telescope by W OTTWAY & Co Ltd, Ealing 1915, with a stitched leather barrel, end protectors and strap.
The telescope is in excellent condition with clear optics.
Stamped on the first draw of the telescope is the following:
TEL. SIG (MK III) ALSO G.S.
W OTTWAY & Co Ltd
Ealing
1915
8009
and a broad arrow (crow’s foot) mark.
This example was clearly made in the early stages of WW1, in 1915 by W Ottway & Co. Ltd and has a serial number of 8009.
W Ottway & Co. Ltd was founded in the late 19th century and traded at Orion Works, Ealing but was taken over by Hilger & Watts after 1948 but retained original trading name.
The eye piece still has its original slide cover and is stamped “HIGH” probably defining its magnification.
The lenses are clear and undamaged and it has a 2” diameter objective lens at the far end, that can be glare and weather shielded by a pull-out brass/leather cover.
All of the three pull-out brass sections extend well and have been lightly oiled (with gun oil) to ease their operation. They now have a dark patina, but this could be polished to a bright brass finish.
The telescope also retains both protective leather end caps, that have both been stamped with “III”, on the strap retainer on the top.
The larger cover has also been stamped on the side with the letters:
B
H A C
I
I am not sure what these refer to?
Maybe it’s the leather makers mark or possibly they are regimental markings that relate to the B Battery, Honourable Artillery Company, who were a British artillery unit during WW1.
Remarkably, it also still has its original retaining strap and metal buckle, that are undamaged.
This is a fine example of a genuine WW1 British military telescope, that can still be used today.
It measures 35” (89cm) long when fully extended with the shield extended and 10.75” (27.3cm) long when closed up, without the protective covers fitted.
It weighs a heavy 1.3Kg.
