Here on offer is a large WW1 Bruce Bairnsfather 9” commemorative dish depicting a cooking cartoon and the words THE HISTORICAL TOUCH – “WELL ALFRED OW ARE THE CAKES?”

Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather was a prominent British humourist and cartoonist. His best-known cartoon character is Old Bill. Bill and his pals Bert and Alf featured in Bairnsfather's "Fragments from France" cartoons published weekly in The Bystander magazine during WW1.

On the front the dish depicts a central cartoon in sepia tones, of Alfred cooking and the words THE HISTORICAL TOUCH – “WELL ALFRED OW ARE THE CAKES?”

Then around the inner edge it has a raised scallop pattern in the pottery.

On the back it has a sepia image of “Old Bill” above which are the words:

COMMENCED AUG 4TH 1914
ARMISTICE NOV 11TH 1918
PEACE SIGNED JUNE 28TH 1919

The dish has a hairline crack at about 1 o’clock, when you look at the front, along with some age crazing to the glaze finish but retains the gilded finish to the rim.

It measures 8.25” (21cm) diameter, 1.25” (3.2cm) deep and weighs 265g.
