Original WW2 A.R.P. Whistle by J. Hudson & Co of Barr St Hockley Birmingham with Chain

Here on offer is an original WW2 A.R.P. whistle by J. Hudson & Co., Barr St, Hockley, Birmingham.

This seems to be one of the four types that J. Hudson made, this one having the body of their metropolitan whistle.

It still retains its original long linked metal chain, which is now missing its end clip. The chain looks to have been made from a nickel silver alloy and it is fixed to the whistler with a silver a hallmarked lobster spring clasp, that has a maker mark of JM and a date letter of ‘M’ relating to the year 1886.

The A.R.P. were the Air Raid Precautions, a British civilian organization during WW2 responsible for protecting the public from air raids.

The front of the whistle is stamped with the following details:

J. HUDSON & CO.
BARR ST. HOCKLEY
BIRMINGHAM

The metal shows some light tarnishing and the strap has some age wear, but no splits or repairs.

The whistle measures 3.4” (8.7cm) long to the top of the ring and 0.8” (2.1cm) diameter on the main body.

The metal chain is 13.5” (34.3cm) long, end to end.

It weighs 58g with the chain.
