Here on offer is a rare Victorian gilt cast brass doorstop, depicting Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley on a camel, circa 1885.

Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley, was a prominent British military commander and reformer in the 19th century, who held the rank of Major General for a significant period. He was known for his colonial campaigns, his influence on the British army, and the phrase "All Sir Garnet" which means "everything is in order".

He had a distinguished military service, fighting in numerous conflicts, including the Second Burma War, the Crimean War, the Indian Mutiny, and the Third China War.

He was particularly noted for the Ashanti campaign (1873–1874) and the Nile Expedition against Mahdist Sudan (1884–1885).

He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Forces from 1895 to 1900.

The doorstep has been cast in solid brass with a bright gilt finish.

It shows Wolseley in a desert military uniform, as worn in the Nile Expedition, sitting astride a camel. There is a lot of fine detailing to this image, such as his binoculars, sword, etc.

Engraved on the front of the base is the name:

WOLSELEY

On the back there is an Rd number 23085 which relates to the year 1885.
This example is in excellent condition with just some loss of gilt to his head and the camel’s face. There is some minor age related green Verdigris on the back.

It makes an impressive display piece of military related memorabilia and still works as a great doorstop!

The doorstop measures 11.6” (29.5cm) high and 8.25” (21cm) wide at the base.

It weighs a heavy 1.425Kg.
