WW1 'Cheeky' Heart Shaped Cast Iron Trench Art Flanders Souvenir Trinket Tray
Here on offer is an original WW1 'Cheeky' heart shaped, cast iron metal Trench Art Tray, from Flanders.
On the front it shows a Ww1 British Officer walking with a Belgium lady who is in traditional dress, with the classic large bow shaped headdress.
There is also a Belgium windmill in the background.
On the reverse it shows a scene of the back of the lady and officer, he is cheekily pinching the bottom of the lady under her skirt!
These WW1 souvenirs were made to be sold to the serving soldiers in the Flanders area.
Flanders Fields was a common English name of the WW1 battlefields in an area straddling the Belgian provinces of West Flanders and East Flanders as well as the French department of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, part of which makes up the area known as French Flanders.
The tray is in excellent undamaged condition being made from cast iron that now has a lovely dark aged patina to its finish. There is some light rust oxidisation in some areas.
It measures 4.3” (11cm) long and 3.25” (8.3cm) wide.
It weighs 192g.
