Victorian Folding Pocket Quill Cutter Pen Knife with 1.5" Fine Steel Blade and Carved MOP Grip c1850

Here on offer is a beautifully made Victorian folding pocket quill cutter pen knife with 1.5" fine steel blade and shaped and carved Mother of Pearl, grip circa 1850.

These knives were made for the shaping, sharpening and slotting of feather quill pen nibs, back in the Georgian and Victorian periods.

There are no makers details on the knife, but the narrow blade is marked on the tang “FINE STEEL”. The blade is in excellent condition with just some light age staining to parts of the finish.

It has brass liners with beautiful carved Mother of Pearl (MOP) grip plates that are held in place with three tiny brass pins. The scales have been carved with stylised grooves at both ends of the scales. They are in excellent condition with just a tiny chip to the tip on one scale, which is hard to see.

I believe it was made in Sheffield by one of the quality knife makers around 1850 or earlier.

The blade measures 1.5” (3.8cm) long and the whole knife when open measures 4.5” (11.4cm).

It weighs 11g.
