Rare Antique 19th Century Turkana Tribal Animal Hide Warrior Shield from Lake Turkana Kenya.
Here on offer is a rare antique 19th century tribal animal hide warrior shield from lake Turkana Kenya.
This Turkana tribe have made this original example from hippopotamus or rhinoceros hide, it is difficult to say which one?
It has an elongated, rectangular shape with a central ridge and slightly curved and pointed corners. The central ridge also aids in deflecting blows.
There is a central wooden pole on the back that doubles as a grip handle and structural support. It is held in place with plaited hide.
Traditionally Turkana warriors used the shields for protection in combat, but the shields were also important cultural objects, symbolizing a warrior's status, identity, and prestige. They played a role in ceremonies and were often displayed as objects of aesthetic power.
Due to the ban on inter-clan warfare and strict regulations on the killing of wild animals, the traditional making of these hide shields had to cease, making early examples highly valued and collectible. I have seen examples sell for way over £1,000!
The Turkana then had to develop iron versions which were apparently safer, lighter and far better in combat than hide shields.
This shield is in excellent condition with just a tiny edge spilt. It now has a rich dark patina, a testament to its usage and age, making it a impressive piece.
To the top of the pole, it measures 37.5” (95cm) long. Across the pointed corners it measures 12.5” (31.8cm) and the centre section is 9” (23cm) wide.
It weighs 2.3Kg.
