Unusual 18th or 19th Century Large 18” Spearpoint Bladed Short Sword or Machete with Horn Grip
Here on offer is an unusual and rare, 18th or 19th century large 18” spearpoint bladed short sword or machete, with horn grip slabs.
I can’t find any information about this type of short sword or machete, but it looks to possibly be German?
I do love this piece as is has such an impressive blade and is clearly very old!
The grip is made up from two shaped horn slabs, fixed in place against the full and beak shaped blade tang with four iron rivets/pins.
There is a section of horn missing on one side of the grip at the top where is curves. And a small slice missing on the edge. Also, both sections of the horn grip now show “flaking” to the finish, most likely caused by it drying out during its life.
I have applied some renovating wax to the horn that will help to stabilise and preserve it.
The impressive 18” spearpoint blade has been made from top quality steel and it remains straight and strong and now has age staining to the finish. It still retains a very good cutting edge.
On one side it is stamped with what I assume is the makers mark:
H with a c inside the H
I can’t find any reference regarding the maker “H c” relates to, so if anybody does know, please can you let me know?
It does not come with its scabbard, which if it had one, has been lost over time.
It measures 23.25” (59cm) long and it has an 18” (45.6cm) blade. The main section of the blade is 2.2” (5.5cm) wide.
It weighs a heavy 585g.
