Antique Drenching Horn Farm Implement Engraved with WC
Here on offer is an antique 19th century drenching horn farm implement, made from the horn of a large cow.
This was used when livestock were given liquids including medicine in the days before syringes and plastic bottles.
The "medicine" would be poured into the horn while a farmhand held the animal's head. Then the wide end of the horn would be inserted into its mouth and then tipped up so it went down quickly.
This example is in great condition, with signs of years of use and it now has a wonderful patina. The initials of the original owner “WC” have been carved into the horn, three times, in a typically Georgian style which could suggest it was made in the early 1800’s
It also has a hole drilled through it at the top to allow a loop of rope to be fitted.
These drenching horns are not easy to find in such good condition, and only a few are now obtainable, outside of agricultural museums.
It measures 16” (40.6cm) long, including the curve of the horn, and weighs 260g.
