Early Nepalese Gurkha Fighting Kukri with Leather Wrapped Grip

Here on offer is a genuine early, possibly WW1 period, Nepalese Gurkha fighting Kukri with leather wrapped grip.

This genuine example is just how I like to find them and has really seen some action during its life.

The 13.75” (35cm) blade has a 0.4” (0.9cm) thick, ridged spine narrowing gradually to the point and is 2.1” (5.5cm) wide at the belly, with a short double fuller running below the top spine.

The heavy fine quality blade is actually in great condition, still straight and it retains a sharp cutting edge. It now has a dark patina to its finish, some of which would probably polish out, if required.

The Cho or notch at the base of the blade is believed to be a symbolic representation of a cow' foot, a sacred animal to all Hindus. The Cho serves to stop blood, sap or other fluids from running onto the handle and making it slippery. It serves as a traditional mark of authenticity also acts as a stop point for sharpening the blade.

The hardwood grip has lost its carved raised ridges and at some point in its life has been wrapped in leather strapping, that actually makes a comfortable non-slip grip. At the top the pommel now consists of a rectangular steel plate that is securely fixed to the tip of the tang.

There are no markings on the blade or other fittings, which is not uncommon on these early WW1 period pieces.

There is no scabbard with this kukri.

This Kukri has clearly seen service and is a fine example of genuine used Kukri, not a tourist piece!

The blade measures approximately 13.75” (35cm) long and the knife is 17.5” (44.5cm) in total length.

It weighs 610g.
