Pre WW1 Hallmarked Silver MIZPAH and Suffolk Regiment Double Heart Sweetheart Brooch by C&S - 1907
Here on offer is a scarce pre WW1 hallmarked silver MIZPAH and Suffolk Regiment, double heart sweetheart brooch by C&S – 1907
This sweetheart brooch depicts two hollow silver conjoined hearts, one bearing the Suffolk Regiments crest badge, with a crowned castle.
The other heart shows the MIZPAH benediction, that reads as:
THE LORD WATCH BETWEEN THEE & ME WHEN WE ARE ABSENT ONE FROM ANOTHER
The front depicts the raised cutout image of what looks to be a British 15 Pounder artillery cannon, being the type used during the Boer War.
The reverse still has its original long retaining pin and “C” clasp.
Also on the reverse are a clear set of English silver hallmarks.
The hallmarks are an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham, the Lion Passant for English silver and the date letter “h” for the year 1907.
There is also the makers mark “C&S”, which I can’t find a maker’s name for, but this maker’s mark appears on a number of fine quality silver sweetheart brooches from this period.
I believe that a member of the Suffolk Regiment would have given this brooch to his sweetheart, when he went on duties to Aden, around 1907/8.
The brooch is in great condition and is a rare example of a Suffolk Regiment brooch.
It measures 1.8” (4.7cm) wide and weighs 4g.
