Unusual Antique TRUFLITE Throwing Knife by William Rodgers and Distributed by Marshalls of Glasgow with Leather Sheath
Here on offer is an unusual version of a TRUFLITE throwing knife, the like of which I have not seen before?
The knife has been made using a full tang construction. It has a double-edged thick spear tip blade and seems to have been made using a high quality polished steel.
The thin flat grip scales are very unusual and seem to be made from bright chrome plated steel and have been fixed to the tang with almost invisible flat head rivets.
Another unusual feature of this knife is the grip has angled serrated edges, as has the blade on both edges, up to 2” from the tip.
Now on one side of the blade, it is very lightly etched (hard to see) with the words:
TRUFLITE
THROWING KNIFE
along with an ornate scroll pattern.
Below it is etched with:
MADE IN SHEFFIELD
ENGLAND
My understanding is that this type of TRUFLITE throwing knife was only made by William Rodgers of Shefield. Other examples I have seen that use this blade and TRUFLITE name, are etched with ‘I CUT MY WAY’ William Rodgers, Sheffield. Just this example isn’t?
On the other side of the blade it is etched with the retailer’s name, being:
MARSHALLS
50 ST ENOCHS SQ
GLASGOW
I believe Marshalls was a retailer who operated at that address, around the turn of the 20th century and ceased business in the 1930’s. So, I would probably date this example to the 1920’s?
It comes with its original brown leather sheath, that still retains the press stud strap at the top and split belt loop.
The knife is in great condition with some light greying to the blade. This unusual variant makes a fine collector’s example of this type throwing knife.
The blade section measures 4.4” (11cm) long and the whole knife is 7.3 (18.6cm) long.
It weighs 127g.
